Watercolor and mixed media by San Antonio artist Candy Foy

The Sad Man

” I just started painting again about 10 years ago and my work can be very passionate. I want a  person to  look at my work and see what it means to them. It is always important to open ourselves up to a whole new world that we might have missed.”

Editor’s Note: These paintings evoke so much about our moment: the call to find beauty in masked faces, the politics of seeing others, and the way that words and media can both form us and obscure our forms. Sometimes I feel like Foy’s “Sad Man”–worn out from trying to be. At other times I identify with the artist herself: looking avidly, with curiosity and love, for the beauty among us. — Rachel Pearson
